Biopolymers for road construction

Reducing pollution from asphalt production and utilization

Research institute: TNO

ECOBIND is an innovative technology aimed at reducing the environmental impact of asphalt production by partially replacing bitumen, a crude oil-derived material, with a biopolymer called poly-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate (PHBV). This biopolymer is obtained through a water purification process that treats wastewater, helping to lower CO2 emissions and reduce pollution associated with asphalt production.

By incorporating biopolymers into the bitumen mixture, ECOBIND supports the road construction industry’s goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The technology has been validated in laboratory settings and is available at a kilogram scale, targeting markets such as asphalt producers, bitumen suppliers, and the construction industry.

We are looking for passionate individuals with entrepreneurial and business development skills who wants to innovate an old – fashioned industry. Apply now!
